PROMO: Denver's Next Improv Star

The Bovine Metropolis Theater turns the reality TV contest concept on its head with Denver's Next Improv Star, an elimination-style improvisation performance that pits 15 local improvisers against each other to see who will be the last one standing after 11 weeks of competition.

The competition began January 23, so there are still a dozen or more contestants to cheer and jeer.

"We all love reality TV," says Bovine artistic director Eric Farone. "We love picking who we want to win. The audience's opinion matters and will influence the outcome."

Each week contestants are put through a variety of short form games and long form scenes. Two judges and a guest judge decide who goes home, until Denver's Next Improv Star is revealed.

The show is appropriate for all ages (except squirmy children who would rather be home anyway) and begins at 8 p.m. every Saturday evening. Tickets are $16.

Call 303-758-4722 for information and reservations, or visit www.BovineMetropolis.com.

PROMO: Richard II

The Upstart Crow, Boulder's classical community theatre, will present William Shakespeare's The Life and Death of King Richard the Second as part of its 30th anniversary season. Richard II is one of Shakespeare's lesser-performed history plays, and that's a tragedy (pun intended).

The play is a fascinating, and quite beautiful meditation on the nature of kingship: the duality between the infallible ruler awarded his position by divine right as God's anointed deputy, and the human weakness of a man embroiled in power politics. In Richard's view, there is no separation between church and state, and to resist the rightful ruler, even a bad one, is to challenge God's will.

Are our leaders subject to the same laws as the rest of us? Is a person who is called by God to a particular vocation immune to criticism? These are great questions, and Richard II is a great play because it addresses them.

Performances of Richard II are at the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder, through March 6. Call 303-442-1415 for information or reservations, or visit www.the upstartcrow.org.

PROMO: Evergreen Chorale presents 'Guys and Dolls'

The Evergreen Chorale will present the classic hit musical Guys and Dolls, February 19 - March 7, 2010.

The Broadway musical based on characters from short stories by Damon Runyon first opened in 1950, and chronicles the adventures of a colorful array of post-war night owls who try to avoid committed relationships. High rolling gamblers and Salvation Army mission workers butt heads and hearts in this tuneful romantic and comedic musical.

The show features such hit Frank Loesser songs as "Luck Be a Lady," "I've Never Been in Love Before," "More I Cannot Wish You," and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat." The musical won five Tony Awards in 1951 and was made into a movie starring Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando.

The Evergreen Chorale will present Guys and Dolls at the Center Stage theatre in Evergreen, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for children, $17 for students and seniors, and $19 general.

Call 303-674-4002 for information and reservations, or visit http://www.evergreenchorale.org/. Season tickets are available.
